Capturing Seoul's underground in pictures and sound
Lindsay Ryklief comes from Cape Town, South Africa, and works in Seoul across two fields: photography and music. As a photographer he has shot campaigns for Nike, FIFA, Footlocker, Converse and Google, as well as K-pop artists and musicians. As a DJ, under the name LIGRYE, he has become a fixture of Seoul's underground scene.
His best-known photo series, Boys of Seoul, portrays Korean men in a raw, gentle and vulnerable way and challenges fixed ideas of masculinity, showing that strength and softness can sit together. The series has been featured in international media. He held solo exhibitions in 2020 and 2021.
LIGRYE debuted at the Seoul club Exit in 2013 with house, techno and bass, and his sound has since grown to include afrobeats, ballroom house and experimental world rhythms. He has played Boiler Room Seoul and festivals such as ULTRA Korea, Spectrum, Holiday Land and Arcadia, as well as the Balmain x H&M store opening, a Louis Vuitton collection opening, the Seoul Fashion Festival and the Art Basel after party in Hong Kong. He has also toured China, from Beijing and Shanghai to Shenzhen and Chengdu.
He also creates parties: JOL, which brings African sounds to Seoul; Filtered, where music meets art; SHADE, which has hosted international artists such as Yaeji, Kim Anna Foxman and Mike Q; and Femme, an ode to the feminine. All of them are LGBTQIA-inclusive spaces. As a model he has worked with GQ, i-D, Purple magazine, Budweiser and Soho House, and he has been featured by i-D (US, Poland, Japan and Mexico), Dazed Korea and OkayAfrica as one of Seoul's standout creatives.
